Objective: significantly increase the productivity of the herds (output per animal) in the project Aimags through quality   veterinary services and extension inputs by trained and motivated private veterinarians.

  Expected main results are:
  - At least 85% of veterinarians of the selected Soums are trained in modern veterinary care practices, breeding concepts,      herd management and improved customer relations with herders.
- The Model Herder approach is further developed and introduced in selected Aimags. The methods to extend the knowledge from the model herders to surrounding herder families have been developed, tested and introduced.
- A functional data base for the extended private veterinary services of Mongolia is developed, tested and established in the 7 project Aimags by the end of phase I of the project.

The component will be implemented by Mongol V.E.T. Net NGO.

Main activities: Component 1 is scaling up a well introduced, tested and successful support to the private veterinary system of Mongolia. Component 1 banks on the expertise, experience and reputa-tion of the V.E.T. Net programme implemented in Mongolia since 2005. The training curricula are adapted annually to the needs of the herders as reported by the private veterinarians. Herders receive specific V.E.T. Net produced training materials through the local private veterinarians. Model herders receive routine visits from private veterinarians. Model herders and 20% of surrounding herders are attending annual field days and participate in demonstrations of veterinary sustainable services, such as quality veterinary drugs, grazing management, modern veterinary technology, production management, and business principles. Annually, model herders are providing reliable livestock production data for V.E.T. Net. Each model herder will be supplied by the local private veterinarian with drugs and equipment throughout phase I of the project.

Private veterinarians receive business and business plan training and are assisted to have access to lines of credit through local banks.

During phase I, extension methodology will be developed and piloted in a defined area of the project to extend the model herder approach to the surrounding herders in following topics, such as animal health issues, breeding, animal and pasture management.

A functional data base for the entire country will be developed and tested within this project. The establishment of the baseline data as well as the development, introduction and training of the system will be supported by a technical assistance component.
